Carole De Buck goes through life sketching, wanting to capture what would otherwise disappear in the moment. ‘I see my drawings as a playground, where I can communicate with others in an easy and direct way, without many words.’
Carole: ‘I was born and grew up in Ghent, spent a year in Paris and have been living in Brussels for more than four years. I'm really starting to feel at home there. I'm working for vzw Toestand, a non-profit organisation that aims to give empty buildings and abandoned spaces a new temporary use for the diverse communities in this city. This gave me the chance to discover Brussels in this way, which influenced me deeply.
I combine social work with my artistic practice and use my drawings to capture and understand the complex and impulsive society. I also see my drawings as a playground, where I can communicate with others in an easy and direct way, without many words. Life inspires me to draw, and drawing helps me see the world in a different way.'
Carole: ‘My sketchbook always has two functions. It serves as my drawn diary, but is also a notebook for anything I need to write down quickly. Very often notes flow together with drawings, and text emerges from drawings. I always have my sketchbook with me. It makes me feel like I'm sketching through life: to capture a moment, bring a memory into focus or represent an idea for a new design.'
Carole: 'I draw almost every day. I also notice when I draw less. Often it happens in a somewhat down period. 'You haven't really been drawing lately, have you? Is everything okay,' good friends sometimes ask me. Haha. When I feel good, I draw like crazy. I want to capture everything: the funny, special or extraordinary (but also so ordinary) things I see, hear or experience. It's as if I want to capture something that would otherwise disappear into the moment. Of course, I often take pictures of what I want to draw later, because sometimes moments pass so quickly.
I work mainly with my carpenter's pencil, which I always carry with me, and black markers. I keep it simple so I can carry everything in my smallest handbag. The bigger my bag, the more markers I carry. Sometimes I add colour stencils when I want to get creative. But what I always carry with me is a sketchbook and a pencil, because you never know when inspiration will come up.'
